Before grabbing your luggage and heading off on vacation, it’s important to prep your home. This departure list is sure to get your home shipshape so you can enjoy a worry-free vacation. Consider these to-do list items before you go. Bon voyage!
Make sure to leave the pet sitter or boarding facility with detailed care instructions. If you’re boarding your pet, pack plenty of your furry friend’s favorite food, treats, toys, medicine and other supplies for while you’re away.
Wash and put away laundry before you leave. Change your bed sheets so your first night home brings you a welcomed rest.
Ask a friend or neighbor to water your plants. To help them out, leave a list of plants, locations and recommended watering schedule. If no one is available, consider investing in self-watering plant stakes.
For a short trip, it’s smart to leave a few lamps on throughout the house to make it look occupied. For a longer vacation, invest in inexpensive automatic timers that turn lights on and off at staggered intervals. Alert your home security service or a trusted neighbor, so one or the other can keep an eye on your home.
Before you leave, temporarily adjust the thermostat so the air conditioning (or furnace) doesn’t waste energy by running in an empty house. Consider unplugging unnecessary appliances.
A call to your post office and news carrier will put your mail and newspapers on hold, so they won’t pile up in front of your house while you’re gone.
Sweep or vacuum floors; do the dishes; wipe down the counters in the bathroom and kitchen and give your toilets a quick clean. Don’t forget to clean out the fridge and throw away any food that will expire while you’re gone; take out the trash before you leave. Make it a place you’ll be happy to come home to!
